Gibson 1980 ES-175 CC Sunburst Charlie Christian Model

Gibson 1980. ES-175 CC Charlie Christian Model in Tobacco Sunburst Finish.

Archtop guitar with a factory installed Charlie Christian pickup,

The de facto jazz standard, built on March 3rd, 1980 approx. and the 3rd guitar made

that day in Kalamazoo, MI.

This is a one-of-a-kind guitar from the rare Charlie Christian series.

Only 479 total instruments were produced from 1978-1980 in Kalamazoo.

(Although most literature says ‘78 - ‘79, Gibson did not actually stop production

until early 1980).

This was one of the very last, perhaps even « THE LAST” built.

It is the only known Gibson 175 guitar to have been made with natural amber colored fingerboard inlays.

They are of medium rose-amber color.

Charlie Christian

Charlie Christian2

Charlie Christian was an extremely popular influential and busy guitarist in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, famously in the Benny Goodman band.

Unfortunately he contracted tuberculosis, and died in 1942 at the age of 25. He most often used a Gibson ES-150, with the single coil pickup that has come to be named after him.

The Charlie Christian pickup was one of the first successful pickup designs.

Christian wanted to emulate the tenor saxophone, and this pickup offers deep, rich tones.    The original designs used a rather large, heavy metal mount with three screws through the guitar top for installation and adjustment.
